It was a warm night in the cold Israeli spring of 1948 when the founder of the 101 squadron, Israel's first Air Force Squadron, Modi Alon, met two American volunteers of the newly fledged squadron, Stan Andrews and Bob Vickman. These two brave American volunteers were experienced WWII pilots.

In a Tel-Aviv Cafe' the bonded three, along with few of their new friends, decided to choose a symbol for the 101 Squadron. Having on their minds the enormous Egyptian Army they soon had to fight, someone, half-laughingly, made a comment that the only one that truly defeated Egypt in the past was the Angel of Death.

The two American volunteers who were also aspiring-artists immediately started sketching a corresponding symbol. After perfecting their Sketches They gave it to my Master and he created this amazing American-Style and Skull-in-the-Middle artifact you see now. As you can see, this symbol is very special and intriguing. It is also the first and only Israeli army (IDF) symbol to have a humane figure on it.

The story does not end well for the founder of the 101 Squadron and his two American volunteers. The three and just 27-year-olds of them (and many others of their friends) all tragically lost their lives in soon-to-be encounters with the Angel of Death. Bob Vickman was lucky enough to survive a plane-crash but he was not lucky enough to survive his Egyptian capturers. His body has never been recovered from the Egyptian Desert.

But for the Master it was the beginning of a successful and long relationship with the Israeli army. A fruitful relationship whose few of its remaining fruits I can share now with you!

First, the master crafted the imprint of this pin (the “SHTANTZ” or Stanz) which was not much bigger (and sometimes even smaller) then one of your finger nails:

 

 

Then, this artifact was Drop-Casted on a quality metal plaque. After cutting the shape from the plaque the master welded a special pin in its back. To ensure superb quality the master then coated this artifact in a special liquid.

And last, the master used his delicate hands to add the magnificent colors (By hand, my child, by hand!).
